What do you expect. They are all the same people.

That is actually not true about Syria's people. But then again it depends on what you mean by "same people" (DNA? Maybe, Geographically? Yes, Culturally? Somewhat, Religion? No.).

Awesome! And we are supporting them why exactly?

Assad has been trying to stoke ethnic violence. There are a lot of different ethnicities in Syria.

I wish I had the links handy (but they are probably from Stratfor), but yes, this bodes very ill for Syria. It is pretty impossible to support any "good" rebels here, as there are too many different rebel groups. Things will likely soon degenerate into the "rebels" fighting each other. Assad was trying to get this started in earnest before he started losing in earnest.

You can probably find reports from NPR and CS Monitor of ethnic militias attacking nearby villages from their own claiming to be in support of the Regime. It was pretty clear there was a lot being done to provoke retaliations and the like. I think Assad was trying to create so much chaos and inter-rebel fighting that he and his regime would look like a better alternative.

It may be too late for that. And worse yet, once he's gone nobody will be able to put the genie back in the bottle.

I think its more true that these regimes (and that included the Soviets and Yugoslavians) did not try and cure ethnic animosities between their peoples but played one group against the other (and also European colonialists did this as well which made ethnoct tensions worse as time went by for example in Rwanda the hatreds there can be linked to the colonial policies that pitted Hutu against Tutsi).
